Barcelona neighbourhood guide at a glance

Barcelona's distinct neighbourhoods each have a genuinely different character — choosing the right one can make or break your trip. The Gothic Quarter is atmospheric but densely touristic (and has higher petty-theft concentration — use a front-facing bag). El Born next door has a more local, design-savvy feel with better restaurants. Eixample is the widest-boulevards, most comfortable option — well-policed, central and closest to the Gaudí Modernisme concentration.

For longer stays or repeat visitors, Gràcia is Barcelona at its most authentic — a former independent village with local squares, independent cafés and almost no tourist restaurants. Poble-sec is the rising foodie neighbourhood with Carrer de Blai's pintxos bars. Barceloneta is perfect for beach-centric trips but limited as a cultural base in winter.
